Past Midnight

And thus a dreamy evening begins...

I have to give credit where credit is due. Jezebel over at Rachel's Haven inspired the layout for this cap. She's been formatting her caps in this elongated fashion and using a font reminiscent of good old fashioned print. I decided to try for a bookish feel for this cap which is a bit different from what I normally do, but I'm all about trying new things here!

"Past Midnight" Transcript:

“So what’s up?” Phillip asked as he walked in through Olivia’s door.
Olivia opened her mouth as if to speak, but paused momentarily before doing so, “I have a…tiny…problem that I could really use your help with.”
Phillip cocked an eyebrow. “What is it?” he asked wearily. If Olivia was asking him for help, it wasn’t tiny.
“Well, my cousin from out of town is here with me this week and we were originally planning on going to the concert over on 2nd and G street tonight—just us girls—but then Sean found out I was going and asked me to go with him, like as in a date! You know how long I’ve been waiting for Sean to ask me out! Well, my cousin doesn’t want to come if she’s going to be a third wheel, but I couldn’t feel right leaving her alone, so I thought maybe if I got her a date…” Olivia looked at Phillip hopefully.
Phillip sighed. Damn those big brown eyes of hers. They had a way of pleading with your soul. “So, does this cousin of yours have a name?”
The room became visibly brighter as Olivia smiled. “Julian—ahem, I mean Juliana.”
Phillip stared at her skeptically. He knew that guilty look.
“Oh what’s the use? Juliana’s a bit different from most other girls in that she’s…a boy. There, I said it. Please don’t tell her I told you. She’d be horrified if she knew. Please Phil, do this for me, please.”
Again with the puppy eyes. Phillip gave her a tired sigh, “Alright, when do you want me to pick ‘her’ up?”
Olivia nearly tackled him to the floor as she embraced him, her hold so tight that he nearly passed out from lack of oxygen. “Thank you so much! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I owe you one Phil. As for tonight, let’s say 6:30, but the two of you should meet first! She’s upstairs!”
Phillip nearly fainted a second time upon meeting Juliana. The bewitching blonde that in Olivia’s room seemed ethereal and for a moment, he wondered if maybe he had actually fallen over and was now hallucinating. Juliana broke the silence with a cheery greeting. Even her voice was angelic.
Noticing his dumbfounded gaze, Olivia nudged him with her elbow, “Be nice, Phil. You don’t have to like her—though pretending you do would be great—just be nice. Phil, are you even listening to me? Phil!”
The sharp jab in his ribs finally broke the enchantment, “Oh yeah, uh pretend, right.” Pretend? He wouldn’t have to pretend at all. She was drop dead gorgeous! “Look, I might have to call in that favor a bit sooner than I thought.”
Olivia shot him an infuriated look, “Don’t you dare tell me you’re backing out now!”
“Not at all. On the contrary, I just want your consent to the fact that I may not have Juliana home by midnight.”

  1. Fantastic dialogue Kendall. It was as if this was a real conversation that you were involved in. And using one of the most gorgeous women on the planet as a CD left me "spellbound!!"

  2. Here's what I find so interesting about this cap: It basically comes down to a pun towards the end. However, your exceptional storytelling make that same pun an afterthought. The dialogue flowed like water. I was highly impressed with how this read.

I'll let you in on a secret: I read most of your captions in the blog post before actually clicking on the image. I love your writing so much that I want to simply enjoy and judge it on it's own. The fact that you take such great care in your formatting and image selection shows why you are a standout.
